What to plant on the allotment this autumn

An autumn harvest of squash and pumpkins

Autumn is a great time to get ahead. Garlic, broad beans and overwintering onions can all go in now for an early summer harvest.

Clear finished beds, add a layer of compost or leaf mould, and cover bare soil to protect it over winter. Green manures such as field beans or winter rye help too.

It’s also the perfect moment to plan next year’s beds with fellow plot holders — and to swap any spare seeds.
